Range of Motion (Upper)
Range of Motion Upper Extremity
Instructions: Provide range of motion (ROM) exercise to the resident’s left shoulder, elbow, wrist and fingers.
Provide three (3) repetitions of each exercise. The
resident is not able to help with the exercises.

Address by name
Introduce yourself
Provide explanations to resident before beginning procedure
Perform range of motion on the shoulder, elbows, wrists and fingers.
Take shoulder through ROM, raising and lowering straightened arm along side, toward head of bed
Take resident’s shoulder through abduction and adduction ROM exercises
Take resident’s shoulder through rotation ROM exercises
Flex and extend elbow through ROM exercises
Provide ROM exercises to wrist (e.g., gently rotate, or flex/extend and move side to side)
Flex and extend finger and thumb joints through ROM exercises
Provide three repetitions of each ROM exercise
Determine resident’s comfort with movement either verbally or by observing resident’s face throughout
ROM exercises
Control extremity throughout ROM exercises providing smooth, slow, nonforceful movement
Range of motion exercises are designed to prevent muscle atrophy in patient’s who have been immobile for long periods of time.
